Fixed mounting

A fixed underrun protection is in place and provides the highest possible safety if an accident should occur. You can also choose an underrun protection that can be removed completely if necessary.

Folding

If the coupling is mounted far underneath the vehicle, the underrun protection may obstruct coupling to the trailer. A folding protection device can be easily folded away to facilitate coupling.

Sliding

A sliding underrun protection device enables you to slide in the protective beam for increased space. This is ideal on, for example, tipper trucks.

Protective beams

The protective beam may need to be replaced if damaged – for example, during a reverse collision. Spare protective beams can be found here.

New UNECE R58 rev. 3

Since 1 September 2019, new regulations apply to underrun protection: UNECE R58 Revision 3. The regulation has a direct effect on components, which must be designed and tested to withstand the greater stresses stipulated in the new regulation.

R58.03 applies to all new type-approved vehicles.

The regulation will also apply to all new registered vehicles from 1 September 2021.

During the period leading up to 1 September 2021, you are able to select complete underrun protection from VBG based on the former regulation (R58.02) or the new regulation.

You can download a summary of the new regulation here.

Bolts are important!

It is imperative that the VBG system is assembled using the right types of bolts with the correct lengths. This is a matter of safety, since the wrong bolt can affect the strength of the system!

VBG bolt kits are surface treated with consideration given to the surrounding materials, and provide corrosion protection in salt-spray tests for up to twice as long as zinc-iron.

•  Grade 10.9 is zinc-aluminium treated to prevent hydrogen embrittlement.

Always choose bolts with the least possible potential difference to the surrounding material in order to minimise corrosion.

How to choose the correct bolt length

You should know the following about underrun protection

Which legal requirements apply?

Since the underrun protection is a critical safety solution, it is governed by strict legal requirements. This increases safety and security for both the driver and other road users.

The regulatory framework for underrun protection is currently governed by ECE R58 revision 3 (R58.03) and, during the transitional period up until 1 September 2021, ECE R58 revision 2 (R58.02).

All of VBG’s underrun protection components comply with requirements in at least one of these regulations.

How do I choose the right underrun protection?

First of all, select the type of underrun protection you require. Is a permanently installed device sufficient, or do you require one that can be removed? Depending on how your coupling is mounted, you may need a folding protection device. Or, if you have a tipper truck for contracting, a sliding device may be the optimal solution for you?

Which components should I choose?

The type of underrun protection determines which components you can choose from. Selection is partly influenced by how and where you want the protection device mounted on the vehicle, and partly by statutory safety distances and dimensions.

H – Minimum section height of the protective beam
